PhD Position in Circular Bioengineering (Computational Focus) at University of Vienna

The Cluster of Excellence Circular Bioengineering at the University of Vienna is offering a new PhD position with a computational focus in the Biochemical Network Analysis group, supervised by Professor Jürgen Zanghellini. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in the intersection of biotechnology, computation, and sustainability. The research aims to develop advanced computational tools and AI-driven frameworks to optimize bioprocesses, enhance the efficiency and robustness of microbial and enzymatic production systems, and contribute to the advancement of circular, resource-efficient production systems. The project involves mathematical modelling, simulation, and the design of computational strategies for sustainable bioproduction. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, combining expertise in bioengineering, materials science, and chemistry. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, international team and benefit from access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and a collaborative doctoral training program (DoSChem). Applicants should have a strong background in data science, computational biology, bioinformatics, chemical engineering, systems biology, or related fields, with solid programming skills. The program language is English, and excellent communication skills are required. The position is fully funded for three years (30 hours/week), with the possibility of extension, and offers a fair and transparent salary according to the University of Vienna's collective agreement. The university is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The application deadline is March 27, 2026, at 12:00 noon. Interested candidates should apply through the University of Vienna Doctoral School of Chemistry (DoSChem) portal, providing all required documents. For more information, visit the DoSChem website or contact the supervisor directly. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in circular bioengineering and sustainable production systems at one of Europe's leading research universities.
