PhD in Atmospheric Ammonia and Nitrogen Deposition Modelling at Aarhus University

Aarhus University is offering a PhD fellowship in the Environmental Science programme, focusing on studying atmospheric ammonia and nitrogen deposition through model development and satellite data integration. The research is part of the Horizon Europe GreenEO project, which aims to support sustainable agriculture and assess its impacts on pollution and biodiversity by integrating new Earth observation data and advancing nitrogen deposition modelling across Europe. The successful candidate will work on implementing satellite-derived high-resolution ammonia and nitrogen dioxide emissions and land surface variables into regional air pollution models, with the goal of improving modelled estimates of nitrogen deposition. The project involves developing new parameterisations for dry deposition of ammonia and collaborating with the GreenEO team to deliver updated nitrogen deposition results for Denmark and Europe. The position is based at the Department of Environmental Science, Roskilde, Denmark, with opportunities for exchange stays at partner institutions. Applicants should have a relevant MSc degree and preferably experience in programming, data processing, statistics, machine learning, and remote sensing. The position offers an international, multidisciplinary research environment. Salary and employment terms follow the collective agreement. The application deadline is December 1, 2025, and the preferred start date is February 1, 2026. For more information, contact the main or co-supervisor.
