PhD Opportunities in Esports Science, Neuroscience, and Biomechanics at University of Limerick

Two new 4-year PhD opportunities are available in the Esports Science Research Lab at the University of Limerick, Ireland, under the supervision of Dr. Adam Toth and Prof. Mark Campbell. The research focuses on collaborative work between Lero and Logitech in esports and gaming science, aiming to investigate neuropsychological and perceptual aspects of gaming health and performance. The project will utilize bespoke hardware and software to capture biometric and performance data from professional and amateur gamers during training and play sessions. Data sources include EEG, fNIRS, GSR, heart rate monitoring, accelerometer, and custom software testing instrumentation. Tools such as Oxysoft, Homer3, Python, LabVIEW, and SPSS will be used for time-series data processing and analysis. PhD students will develop comprehensive theses that contribute new scientific knowledge to biomechanics and simulated racing, manage their own research activities, and develop advanced research and science communication skills. The project emphasizes critical thinking, synthesis of peer-reviewed research, and expertise in biomechanical hardware and software packages. Funding includes a stipend of €25,000 plus €5,750 for fees per annum, fully covering the 4-year duration. Applicants should have a background in sports science, neuroscience, biomechanics, computer science, or related fields, with experience in biometric hardware and data analysis preferred. The opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in esports science, human factors, and performance analysis. For application details, review the eligibility in the advert and contact the supervisors or apply via the University of Limerick's portal.
