Fully Funded PhD Opportunities in Human-Computer Interaction at University College London (UCL)
University College London (UCL) is offering fully funded PhD opportunities in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) for the 2026/27 academic year, based at the UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC). These positions are open to motivated doctoral candidates interested in joining a vibrant, research-intensive environment, working under the supervision of leading academics such as Assistant Professor Mark Colley. UCLIC is renowned for its interdisciplinary research in HCI, user experience, and digital technology, and provides access to world-class facilities and training.
Two major scholarship pathways are available: the UCL Research Excellence Scholarship (UCL-RES) and the UCL Research Opportunity Scholarship (UCL-ROS). UCL-RES is open to exceptional applicants from any country and is awarded based on academic merit and research potential. It covers full tuition fees (Home/Overseas), a maintenance stipend (2025/26 rate: £22,780, 2026/27 rate to be confirmed), and research costs up to £1,200 per year. UCL-ROS is designed to support UK-permanent residents from under-represented Black, Asian, and minority ethnic groups, offering full UK tuition, stipend, conference allowance, and a professional development package.
Applicants must submit a complete admission application to an eligible MPhil/PhD programme at UCL by 9th January 2026, and provide a strong research proposal. For UCL-ROS, candidates must meet specific residency and ethnicity criteria. References are required, including one from the intended UCL supervisor. Previous research experience and a commitment to research are expected. PhD students at UCLIC benefit from direct supervision by two or more academic staff, formal and informal training, and a supportive peer environment. Graduates pursue careers in academia and industry worldwide.
To apply, candidates should prepare all required documents, contact their prospective supervisor (Mark Colley), and follow UCL’s application instructions. More information is available on the UCLIC website and the UCL scholarships pages. The application process is highly competitive, and early contact with the supervisor is encouraged to discuss research interests and project proposals.
