PhD Assistant in European, Public and International Law

Ghent University, a leading institution in Belgium, is offering a PhD assistant position in the Department of European, Public and International Law within the Faculty of Law and Criminology. This role is designed for candidates interested in pursuing academic research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation, with at least 50% of the assignment dedicated to research activities. The position also involves assisting in teaching courses related to constitutional law, including staatsrecht, Belgian Public Law (Faculty of Political Sciences), moot court constitutional law, and legal skills education. Additionally, the assistant will contribute to both internal and external departmental services. Applicants must hold a Master in laws degree, with the requirement fulfilled by the start of the appointment. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) is mandatory. Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in academic and/or project-based research and services, possess excellent teaching and communication skills, and have a strong command of Dutch, both written and spoken. Teaching experience or participation in extra training and conferences is recommended. For foreign diplomas not in Dutch, French, German, or English, a translation must be provided. Previous appointments as junior assistant or doctoral fellow in the Flemish Community will be deducted from the maximum term of six years. The appointment is for two years, with the possibility of renewal twice for two years each, contingent on positive evaluations. Remuneration is determined according to salary scale AAP3, and staff members enjoy a range of benefits including training and education opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, and more. The earliest start date is 1 September 2026. To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 28 April 2026. Required documents include a CV and study results (merged into one PDF), a cover letter, a transcript of the required degree, and a certificate of equivalence for non-EU diplomas. Translations are required for diplomas not in Dutch, French, German, or English. Proof of application for equivalence must be provided if the certificate is not yet obtained. Late or non-online applications will not be accepted. For further information about the vacancy, applicants may contact Prof. Mathieu Leloup at [email protected].
