Doctoral Researcher in Laser-Assisted Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) for Flexible Electronics

Tampere University invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position focused on laser-assisted atomic layer deposition (ALD) within the Laboratory for Future Electronics, part of the Electrical Engineering Unit at the Faculty of Information and Communication Sciences. The research group specializes in sustainable electronics materials, flexible and stretchable electronics, self-powered sensor nodes, and heterogeneous integration. This position is part of the ROPALD project, funded by the Research Council of Finland Proof-of-Concept program, aiming to advance high-resolution printing and low-temperature laser-assisted ALD for large-area electronics. The successful candidate will develop and optimize novel laser-assisted ALD processes for thin-film transistor gate oxides, perform structural and electrical characterization of thin films using advanced techniques (ellipsometry, AFM, SEM, XRD, XPS, IV, CV), and contribute to scientific dissemination through publications, reports, and conferences. Collaboration with project partners and colleagues across Tampere University is integral to the role, as is participation in developing utilization pathways for the new technology. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related field prior to the start date. The position requires both theoretical and hands-on expertise in thin-film electronics fabrication and characterization, strong English language skills, and the ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals. Candidates should demonstrate systematic research abilities, problem-solving skills, and the capacity to work both independently and in multidisciplinary teams. For those who have not completed a degree in Finland, an official English language certificate is required. The position is offered as a fixed-term contract for up to two years, with the possibility of extension. The starting salary is approximately 2700 EUR/month, increasing with experience and progress in doctoral studies. Additional benefits include occupational health care, flexible work schedules, access to modern research infrastructure, and a personal fund for sports and cultural activities. Tampere University provides a vibrant, international research community committed to high-quality doctoral education and scientific excellence. Applications must be submitted through the university’s online recruitment system by January 8, 2026. Required documents include a CV (with publications), a free-form application letter, degree certificates and transcripts, language proficiency certificate (if needed), and other relevant supporting materials. For further information, contact Professor Matti Mäntysalo at [email protected]. Join Tampere University and contribute to cutting-edge research in sustainable electronics and advanced materials, while enjoying the dynamic academic and cultural environment of Tampere, Finland.
