Chalmers University of Technology

Postdoc in Microbial & Data-Driven Food Biotechnology

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Microbial & Data-Driven Food Biotechnology, based in the Biotechnology and Plant-Based Food group within the Division of Food and Nutrition Science, Department of Life Sciences. The group focuses on microbial innovation, fermentation science, and sustainable food processing, contributing to research, innovation, and education for a biobased society and improved human health. The MIND initiative (Microbial & Data-Driven Food Innovation Hub) is a national competence platform hosted at Chalmers, collaborating with RISE and industry partners to develop microbial and digital resources for next-generation food and circular bio-based applications. The research project aims to advance sustainable, resilient, and data-driven food systems by integrating microbial biodiversity, advanced genomics, fermentation science, and digital innovation. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will help build MIND’s biological and digital core, combining microbial genomics, functional characterization, fermentation science, and predictive data analysis. The project offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of academia and industry, translating microbial biodiversity into safe, competitive, and sustainable food innovations. Responsibilities include establishing and developing MIND’s microbial strain collection, strain isolation, cultivation, preservation, and functional characterization in close collaboration with research team members and industry partners. You will design and implement high-throughput phenotyping workflows, integrate genomic and functional data to develop predictive, data-driven tools for microbial and fermentation innovation, and coordinate with consortium partners. The role also involves experimental planning, data analysis, scientific dissemination, and supporting the long-term development of MIND as a national competence hub for microbial and digital food biotechnology. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in biology, biotechnology, food biotechnology, microbiology, or a related discipline, with a strong foundation in microbial genomics and data-driven analysis relevant to fermentation and food applications. Proven experience in bioinformatics and data science, including analysis of microbial whole-genome sequencing or metagenomic data, and demonstrated ability to develop computational pipelines for biological datasets is required. Experience in statistical modeling and/or machine learning applied to biological systems, with the ability to link genomic information to functional traits relevant to fermentation or food biotechnology, is necessary. Demonstrated experience in isolating, cultivating, preserving, and functionally characterizing microorganisms, including high-throughput screening of functional traits and analysis of metabolites in complex biological matrices, is expected. Ability to work independently and collaboratively, bridging computational analysis with experimental validation and engaging effectively with interdisciplinary research teams and industry stakeholders is required. Strong communication skills in English (oral and written) and some teaching experience are preferred. A doctoral degree obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline will strengthen the application. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. Funding covers salary and all employee benefits at Chalmers University of Technology. The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, Sweden, with generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and offers Swedish courses for non-native speakers. To apply, submit your application via the Chalmers University of Technology job portal by 31 March 2026. Refer to the advert on Chalmers' webpage for detailed application instructions.
