The University of Strasbourg invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in 'Inclusive Disaster Risk Governance' within the Social Science Research Unit SAGE (UMR 7363). This 18-month, full-time position is part of the RISC project (Risks and Societies in the Age of Global Environmental Change: Issues, Knowledge and Policies), under the Exploratory Research Priority Programme and Equipment (PEPR Risques). The project addresses the growing challenges of risks and disasters arising from climate change and human activities, focusing on the development of inclusive governance mechanisms for sustainable risk and disaster reduction. The successful candidate will work under the scientific supervision of Nils Kessel, Lecturer and head of work package 4 ‘RiskLab’ of the RISC targeted project. The researcher will develop and lead a project on citizen involvement in disaster risk reduction, with an emphasis on comparative and applied research inspired by successful international initiatives. Responsibilities include conducting empirical research, publishing peer-reviewed articles or books, co-hosting scientific events (seminars, symposiums), and engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders such as associations, citizen groups, municipalities, and businesses. The role also involves drafting summary documents, facilitating an international network on inclusive disaster risk governance, and contributing to the scientific output of the RISC project. Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant social science discipline (sociology, political science, anthropology, geography, history, or STS) and demonstrate strong synthesis, writing, and organizational skills. Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, especially with geosciences and health, is valued. Fluency in both French and English is required, and additional language skills or international experience are advantageous. The position is based in Strasbourg, with travel throughout France (8–12 times per year) expected. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary and international, with connections to the CERMES3 laboratory and the broader PEPR RISQUES programme, which is funded under France's PIA4 2030 initiative.
