MSc and PhD Positions in Environmental Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, and Bioinformatics at University of South Africa

The Centre for Molecular Biology and Microbial Engineering (CMBME) at the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, University of South Africa, is inviting applications for fully funded MSc and PhD positions for the 2026/2027 academic year. The program targets motivated students passionate about environmental biotechnology, chemical engineering, chemistry, and bioinformatics, with interests in gene engineering, data science, and machine learning. Research projects address sustainable water quality, pollution control, bio-electrochemical systems, smart water and bioengineering, and computational microbiology for environmental health, contributing to several UN Sustainable Development Goals. Successful candidates will join a multidisciplinary team and may be allocated projects in waste processing and circular bioeconomy, bio-electrochemical systems for pollution control, smart water and bioengineering, or computational and system microbiology. The program is hosted at CMBME and funded by the DSI/NRF Research Chair in Water and Environment. Preference is given to South African citizens or permanent residents, but international candidates with relevant backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Eligibility requires a BSc Honours degree (for MSc) or a Master's degree (for PhD) in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, genetics, microbiology, environmental biotechnology, bioinformatics, data science, chemical engineering, or chemistry. Interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning is advantageous. Applicants must submit a CV, cover letter, academic transcripts, certified ID/passport copy, and two recommendation letters. Applications should be emailed to Dr Arinao Murei ([email protected]) with the subject line: APPLICATION-Scholarship-CMBME: MSc/PhD. For further information, contact Prof Ilunga Kamika ([email protected]). The deadline for applications is 10 January 2026, but late applications may be considered if suitable candidates are not identified. This opportunity is ideal for students seeking to advance their expertise in environmental science, chemical engineering, biology, chemistry, and computer science, and to contribute to impactful research in water and environmental health at a leading African institution.
