Postdoctoral Researcher in Sustainable Energy Materials and Electrochemical Energy Storage at Linköping University
Linköping University in Sweden is inviting applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of sustainable energy materials, with a focus on electrochemical energy storage. The successful candidate will join the Organic Energy Materials (OEM) Group, part of the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE), an internationally recognized research environment with over 150 researchers. The research will center on the development, synthesis, and characterization of biomass-derived carbon materials for sodium (Na) and zinc (Zn) batteries, aiming to design sustainable, high-performance electrode materials for next-generation energy storage systems.
The OEM group, led by Professor Reverant Crispin and Associate Professor Ziyauddin Khan, specializes in organic and bio-based materials for energy transport, conversion, and storage, emphasizing sustainability and environmentally friendly technologies. The group offers comprehensive facilities for battery research, including cleanrooms, advanced chemistry labs, biolabs, photonics labs, and specialized equipment for battery fabrication and testing. Research activities will cover the entire workflow from materials synthesis to electrode fabrication and full cell assembly, with access to battery cyclers, potentiostats, and electrochemical workstations.
The postdoctoral researcher will conduct independent and advanced research on bio-based electrode materials, such as carbon derived from lignin, cellulose, and other biomass resources, and integrate them into electrochemical energy storage devices. Responsibilities include planning and performing experimental studies, structural and chemical characterization, electrochemical evaluation, data analysis, method development, and systematic documentation. The role also involves preparing manuscripts for publication, presenting research at conferences, participating in research meetings, and contributing to project development and funding applications. Up to 20% of working hours may involve teaching duties.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, or a closely related field, with documented experience in electrochemical energy storage or battery materials. Experience with biomass-derived materials, carbon materials, sodium-ion or zinc-based batteries, and electrochemical characterization is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate independent research ability, effective collaboration, initiative, problem-solving skills, organizational ability, and scientific curiosity. Proficiency in English is required; Swedish is an advantage but not mandatory.
The position is a full-time, two-year temporary contract with individual salary and employment benefits as per university policy. The application deadline is March 10, 2026.
