Doctoral Fellow in Thermal Energy Systems and Machine Learning - Department of Electromechanical, Systems and Metal Engineering

Ghent University invites applications for a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Electromechanical, Systems and Metal Engineering. The position is embedded within the STFES research group (Sustainable Thermo-Fluid Energy Systems), renowned for its pioneering work in thermal energy research. The group leverages both experimental and numerical methods to analyze, design, and optimize energy systems, contributing to technical solutions for CO2 reduction in line with the European Union's Energy Roadmap 2050. The PhD project will be conducted in close collaboration with the Dynamic Design Lab, which specializes in modeling, control, and optimization of mechatronic systems and processes. The research focus is on the intersection of thermal energy and hybrid machine learning, combining physics-based models with data-driven techniques. The project aims to develop a framework for fault and root cause analysis in industrial and residential heat pumps and chillers, utilizing causal AI, multimodal data, and engineering models to understand failure mechanisms in complex machines. As a doctoral fellow, you will contribute to ongoing national and international research projects, building on the group's expertise in heat pump technology, cooling technology, and Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC). You will also support the STFES group in educational tasks and internal operations, gaining valuable experience in both research and academic service. Applicants must hold a Master of engineering in (Elektro)mechanical engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field, obtained within the last five years. Experience in thermal energy research, project management skills, and fluent English communication are essential. The ideal candidate is motivated, open-minded, and eager to contribute to the team's goals. The fellowship offers an initial 12-month contract, extendable up to 48 months upon positive evaluation. The grant covers 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Ghent University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including training opportunities, 36 days of annual leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
