PhD in Spatial Planning, Geopolitical Turmoil, and Additive Manufacturing at Delft University of Technology

A fully funded PhD position is available at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, focusing on the spatial planning of industries in times of geopolitical turmoil. The research will explore how geopolitical events, industrial strategies, and innovation impact spatial planning, with a particular emphasis on additive manufacturing (AM), circular economy, and ecosystem thinking. The successful candidate will join the ADDreAM project, a large consortium funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), involving multiple academic, public, and private partners. The project is co-supervised by Karel Van den Berghe, Huiwen Gong, Tom Daamen, and led by Ian Gibson. The PhD will involve building nodal–relational datasets, advancing visual methods for actor networks, conducting interviews and expert sessions, and co-creating policy recommendations for a sustainable and competitive AM sector. Applicants should have an MSc in spatial planning, geography, sustainability, spatial data, or a related field, with experience in mixed-methods research and stakeholder engagement. Skills in GIS, R, and visualisation are advantageous, and familiarity with the Dutch context is a plus. The position is for four years (1.0 FTE), with the possibility of conducting part of the research at the University of Stavanger in Norway. The application deadline is December 7, 2025, and applications must be submitted via the TU Delft portal. For more information and to apply, visit the provided link.
