Fully Funded PhD in Polymer Chemistry and Drug Formulation at University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham, in partnership with AstraZeneca, is offering a fully funded PhD studentship focused on repurposing polymers and drugs for sustainable therapeutics. The project, based in the School of Chemistry, aims to advance the development of amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) to enhance the solubility and performance of poorly water-soluble drugs. Key research areas include the design and synthesis of novel, functionalised polymers through chemo-enzymatic modifications, development of high-throughput and miniaturised analytical and biological screening workflows, and investigation of solid-state formulation stability using advanced inkjet-printing technologies. The project integrates synthetic chemistry, materials science, and pharmaceutical innovation, providing a unique academic–industrial research environment with specialist training and instrument access at AstraZeneca. The successful candidate will be jointly supervised by Dr Vincenzo Taresco and Dr Veeren Chauhan at the University of Nottingham, and Dr George Papakostas and Dr Thomas Floyd at AstraZeneca. The research will involve close collaboration with both academic and industrial partners, offering exposure to cutting-edge drug development processes and mentorship from industry experts. Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, at least a 2:1 Honours degree in Chemistry, Pharmacy, or a related discipline. Experience in polymer synthesis or drug formulation is advantageous but not required. Non-native English speakers must meet the University’s language requirements (IELTS 6.0 with no element below 5.5). The studentship is fully funded for 48 months for UK applicants, covering tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 per annum). International applicants may be considered if they have funding for international tuition fees. To apply, submit a CV, cover letter, and academic transcripts via email to Dr Vincenzo Taresco and through the University of Nottingham’s online application system, selecting 'Chemistry' as the School and listing Dr Vincenzo Taresco as supervisor. The application deadline is 10 March 2026, with a start date in October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. For informal inquiries, contact Dr Taresco or Dr Chauhan. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in polymer chemistry, drug formulation, and sustainable pharmaceutical innovation.
