PhD in Land-Surface Modelling of Mountain Hydrological Processes in the Himalaya at Utrecht University

Utrecht University is inviting applications for a PhD position focused on land-surface modelling of mountain hydrological processes in the Himalaya. This research is crucial for understanding how the mountain cryosphere—comprising snow, glaciers, and permafrost—supports global water resources, especially as these systems face rapid changes due to climate change. The successful candidate will join the Department of Physical Geography within the Faculty of Geosciences, working under the supervision of Professor Walter Immerzeel and Dr Philip Kraaijenbrink. The project aims to quantify and understand the impact of non-linear changes in precipitation, glacier retreat, and snowpack reduction on the mountain water cycle. The PhD researcher will combine detailed land-surface modelling, field observations, and remote sensing to generate outputs that will inform a global, physics-informed AI model for mountain water resources. This work will contribute to a global-scale reanalysis of mountain water supply, supporting sustainable water management for nearly a third of the world's population. The position offers a personalized training program, with about 20% of time dedicated to professional development and teaching support in the department's Bachelor and Master programs. The department is known for its vibrant research community, world-class laboratories, and high-performance computing facilities. Utrecht University values diversity and inclusion, encouraging applicants from all backgrounds. Eligibility: Applicants must hold an MSc in (eco)hydrology, earth system science, computer science, atmospheric science, agroecology, or a related field. Preferred skills include experience in land-surface or hydrological modelling, strong quantitative and programming skills (e.g., Python), and proficiency in English. International candidates must provide English translations of their academic records if selected. Visa and housing support are available, though housing in Utrecht is competitive. Funding: The position is fully funded for up to four years, with a gross monthly salary between €3,059 and €3,881, plus holiday and year-end bonuses, pension, and flexible employment terms under the Dutch university collective agreement. Additional benefits include professional development, sports, and cultural activities. Application: Apply by 6 March 2026 via the Utrecht University job portal, submitting a CV and motivation letter. For more information, contact Prof. Dr Walter Immerzeel ([email protected]) or Dr Philip Kraaijenbrink ([email protected]). The first round of interviews will be held on 17 March 2026. Keywords: hydrology, land-surface modelling, mountain hydrology, Himalaya, remote sensing, AI-based methods, earth system science, physical geography, climate change, water resources.
