PhD Position in Sustainable Photochemical Water Treatment for PFAS Degradation at DTU Sustain

This PhD position at DTU Sustain, Technical University of Denmark, offers an exciting opportunity to advance sustainable water treatment technologies, specifically targeting the degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—a persistent global environmental challenge. The successful candidate will join the Water Technology and Processes section, working within an interdisciplinary team that combines expertise in environmental engineering, photochemistry, electrochemistry, and process optimization. The project centers on developing a sustainable photochemical reduction process for PFAS mineralization using green reducing agents. Key responsibilities include designing and conducting laboratory-scale UV photochemical experiments, investigating the photochemistry and reaction kinetics of novel reducing agents, evaluating PFAS degradation pathways and byproduct formation, optimizing process parameters, integrating new methods with existing PFAS treatment technologies, and analyzing samples using advanced chemical and spectroscopic techniques such as LC-MS, IC, and TOC. The candidate will also disseminate research findings through scientific publications and conference presentations. DTU Sustain is one of Europe's largest university departments specializing in environmental and resource engineering, with a strong commitment to developing environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies. The department boasts approximately 300 staff from over 30 nationalities and offers a vibrant, international research environment. Applicants should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent, with a strong experimental background in water treatment, photochemistry, or chemical reaction engineering. Experience with analytical chemistry techniques for contaminant detection and quantification is essential, as is proficiency in English and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. The position is fully funded for three years, with salary and terms based on the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations' collective agreement. The expected start date is 1 February 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. DTU provides support for international candidates, including relocation seminars and resources for moving to Denmark. Applications must be submitted online by 30 December 2025, including a cover letter, CV, transcripts, diploma, and recommendation letters. The assessment will be conducted by Professor Yifeng Zhang and the project team. DTU is committed to diversity and inclusion and may conduct background checks due to the nature of its research. For further information, candidates can contact Professor Yifeng Zhang or visit the DTU Sustain website.
