About this position

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in Resource-Aware AI for Next-Generation Networks, based in the Department of Electronics and ICT Engineering Technology, Faculty of Applied Engineering. This PhD project focuses on developing computationally efficient, scalable, and adaptive artificial intelligence (AI) models for next-generation communication systems, including radio access, edge, and non-terrestrial network environments. Candidates may specialize in radio/physical-layer intelligence (such as channel estimation, CSI prediction, edge-deployable deep learning) or networking and control-plane intelligence (including reinforcement learning for scheduling, congestion control, link adaptation, and cross-layer optimization). The research direction will be tailored to the candidate’s background and interests, and the project is closely aligned with IDLab research on flexible and deterministic networking.

As a doctoral researcher, you will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis, publish scientific articles, and contribute to teaching and research support tasks within the department. The position offers a stimulating environment at City Campus (The Beacon) and Campus Groenenborger, with access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School. The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, international institution with a strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and sustainability.

Applicants must hold or expect to obtain a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline, with excellent academic results (cum laude/with distinction). Preferred qualifications include experience in wireless communications, signal processing, networking, machine learning or deep learning (especially with PyTorch and TensorFlow), programming skills in Python, and familiarity with C/C++ or MATLAB. Experience with softwarized network stacks or RAN architectures (OAI, srsRAN, FlexRIC), edge computing, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), or experimental testbeds is advantageous. Candidates should be proficient in English and demonstrate the ability to conduct independent research and develop novel algorithms.

The doctoral scholarship is offered for one year, renewable for up to three additional years upon positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is determined by university rates and includes eco vouchers, internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs. The planned start date is July 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

To apply, submit your application online by April 23, 2026, including a motivation letter, academic CV with transcript, two reference letters, English proficiency certificate, and a short research proposal (max. 4 pages) aligned with your interests and IDLab research. The proposal should address the problem statement, expected novelty/impact, approach, evaluation plan, and alignment with IDLab’s focus. The selection committee will review applications after the deadline and notify candidates of next steps. For questions, contact [email protected] or the listed supervisors.

The University of Antwerp is recognized for its HR Excellence in Research and offers a family-friendly, growth-oriented, and inclusive working environment. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
