About this position

The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, is seeking a part-time (80%) postdoctoral scholarship holder to join the Comparative Perinatal Development group within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences. This international, multidisciplinary group is dedicated to advancing animal-centred research, with a particular focus on bridging gaps between veterinary and paediatric science through the innovative research line “From Pigs to Paediatrics.”

Under the coordination of Professor Chris Van Ginneken, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ongoing research projects investigating perinatal gut development in pigs. The research encompasses both field trials and in vitro studies, with a strong emphasis on understanding intestinal barrier function in suckling pigs and the implications of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). The position offers opportunities to contribute to new grant applications, foster external collaborations, and mentor both PhD and master’s thesis students in their research activities.

In addition to research responsibilities, the postdoctoral scholar will participate in teaching activities related to Laboratory Animal Sciences, including lecturing, overseeing course assignments, and coordinating practical sessions. The role also involves representing the group in academic services and promoting research both within and outside the university.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Life Sciences, preferably in Veterinary Medicine or Bioscience Engineering, or be on track to obtain it by the start date. Essential qualifications include fluency in English and proficiency in Dutch, as well as certification for working with laboratory animals (Category C, or Function A and B) and a valid driver’s license B. Candidates should demonstrate alignment with the university’s research and teaching policies, and possess qualities of integrity, creativity, and cooperation.

The position is offered as a part-time postdoctoral scholarship for two years, starting on 1 January 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Benefits include Eco cheques, an Internet connectivity allowance, a bicycle allowance, or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. The work will primarily take place at Campus Drie Eiken, providing a dynamic and stimulating environment with opportunities for professional growth, networking, and interdisciplinary learning.

Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by 15 January 2026. Required documents include a cover letter detailing research interests and motivation, a curriculum vitae, copies of diplomas, and contact information for two references. The selection committee will review applications promptly, and eligible candidates will be informed about subsequent steps, including interviews scheduled for 26, 27, or 28 January 2026.

The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply. For questions regarding the application process, contact [email protected]. For job-specific inquiries, reach out to Professor Chris Van Ginneken at [email protected].
