Description

The BRIDGE-AI Doctoral Network is offering 15 fully funded PhD positions across leading European institutions in Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The network focuses on developing trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) methods for longitudinal neuroimage analysis, with the goal of supporting clinical experts in assessing temporal changes in patients with chronic brain disorders. This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of computer science, neuroscience, and medical imaging, contributing to impactful research in computational brain imaging and AI-driven healthcare.

PhD candidates will join a multidisciplinary team and benefit from a dedicated training program that includes high-profile invited lecturers, science-based and transferable skills training, and regular training events in cities such as Helsinki, Leuven, Lausanne, Bern, Vienna, and Eindhoven. The program emphasizes collaboration with expert clinicians and world-leading companies in the medical imaging domain, providing access to large clinical neuroimaging datasets and expert guidance through international research visits.

Each PhD project is co-supervised by academic and industry leaders. For example, Prof. Dr. Martin Reuter (University Bonn) leads research on deep learning for cortical surface-based analyses, while Dr. Diana Sima (UC Louvain) supervises projects on robust brain volumetry and atrophy estimation. Candidates will have access to advanced computational resources, including high-performance GPU clusters, and opportunities for research stays at renowned institutions such as the Martinos Center at Harvard Medical School and Icometrix in Belgium.

Applicants should have a strong background in computer science, biomedical engineering, applied mathematics, or related fields, with experience in machine learning, deep learning, and programming (Python, PyTorch, C++). A strong interest in both AI method development and clinical applications is essential. Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of employment for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment and must not already possess a doctoral degree. Institution-specific requirements, such as language proficiency, may also apply.

Funding includes full-time employment for three years with competitive remuneration, participation in a comprehensive PhD training program, and support for research visits and training events. Additional funding to complete the PhD thesis may be available depending on the host organization. The BRIDGE-AI network is committed to diversity and gender equality, encouraging applications from women and underrepresented groups in computational neuroimaging.

To apply, candidates must submit their application via Aalto University’s online job platform by January 30, 2026, including a cover letter, CV, transcripts, certificates, and contact information for at least two professional references. Applicants should indicate up to three preferred positions in order of preference. Early application is recommended as screening and filling of positions will begin as soon as applications are received.
