Description

BMW Group, in collaboration with Technische Universität Darmstadt, is offering a PhD position focused on Foundation Models for Robotic Systems and Automation. The role is based in the Innovation and Emerging Technologies Department at BMW Group, Munich, and supervised by Prof. Jan Peters, a leading expert in machine learning and robotics from TU Darmstadt. The research will address real-world manufacturing challenges, applying advanced AI and robotics techniques to enhance automation in automotive production. The successful candidate will participate in the BMW ProMotion program, exploring foundation models to improve perception, decision-making, and adaptability of robotic systems in complex production environments. Responsibilities include developing methods for effective use of production data, tailoring models to automotive requirements, and systematically evaluating and adapting models for BMW-specific applications. The position involves interdisciplinary teamwork and close collaboration with technology partners and internal departments, with opportunities to attend top international conferences in AI, ML, and robotics. Applicants must hold a Master's degree in computer science, data science, or a related field, with strong expertise in AI, robotics, machine learning, deep learning, and related areas. Practical experience in software development (Python, C/C++), and work with robotic arm manipulators is required, along with excellent communication skills and fluency in German and English. Non-EU nationals need a valid residence or work permit. The position offers a competitive stipend, mentoring, onboarding, flexible work arrangements, and student apartments (subject to availability). Applications must be submitted online via the BMW Group career portal. The application deadline is August 1, 2025, and the program starts October 1, 2025, for a duration of 36 months.

Funding

The position offers a competitive and fair stipend, comprehensive mentoring and onboarding, opportunities for personal and professional development, flexible working hours, mobile work options, and student apartments (subject to availability and only at the Munich location).

How to apply
