The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) offers a unique joint doctoral and master's programme in mathematics, bringing together the expertise of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin. The programme is structured in two phases: Phase I guides students from a bachelor's degree to the BMS Qualifying Exam, with the opportunity to earn an MSc, while Phase II focuses on research leading to a PhD (Dr rer nat). Areas of research include geometry and topology, algebraic geometry and number theory, stochastics and mathematical finance, discrete mathematics and optimisation, discrete geometry, numerical mathematics, applied analysis, and mathematics for AI.

Courses are held in English, and students may write their dissertation in English or German. International students with limited German skills are supported with a preparatory language course. The BMS programme is highly international, featuring guest lecturers, intercultural training, and mentoring. Students benefit from the vibrant Berlin mathematics research environment, including DFG Research Training Groups and International Max Planck Research Schools.

Teaching opportunities are available at all three universities, and students can participate in exchange programmes and research visits. The BMS mentoring programme provides individual guidance, and soft skills seminars prepare students for careers in academia or the private sector. Additional support is available for students with children and pregnant students.

Funding is available through scholarships for both MSc and PhD phases, supported by the German Science Foundation (DFG) and the Berlin universities. Extra childcare funds are reserved for student parents. There are no tuition fees, but semester contributions apply. Accommodation is competitive in Berlin, but BMS offers a limited number of rooms in student villages for new students.

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in mathematics or a closely related field for Phase I, or a master's degree for Phase II. Proof of English proficiency is required (TOEFL, IELTS, CPE, or CAE). German language proficiency is not required. The application process is online, and guidelines should be read thoroughly before submission. The first-round deadline is 1 December 2025 for scholarships and early starters; the second-round deadline is 1 April 2026 for admission only and later starters.
