About this position

The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, offers a PhD position in 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) within the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT). The SIGCOM research group, led by Professor Symeon Chatzinotas, specializes in telecommunication and networking systems, including NTNs and quantum communication infrastructures, and is at the forefront of next-generation communication and computing systems research.

As a doctoral researcher, you will focus on advanced research at the physical-layer integration of communication and positioning in next-generation 5G/6G NTNs, with a particular emphasis on LEO satellite systems. Key responsibilities include investigating joint communication and positioning techniques at the waveform and receiver levels, developing integrated signal design and synchronization strategies, and creating signal processing and estimation algorithms for positioning in high-dynamics NTN scenarios. The research will also explore GNSS-5G coexistence and hybrid positioning approaches for resilient PNT in degraded and interference-prone environments, aligning with ongoing 3GPP developments in 5G/6G NTN and positioning standardization. Results are expected to be published in leading peer-reviewed journals and presented at major international conferences.

The position is based at the Kirchberg Campus and offers a fixed-term contract of 36 months, extendable up to 48 months if required. The yearly gross salary for PhD candidates is EUR 41976 (full time). The University of Luxembourg provides a modern, dynamic, and international environment, with high-quality equipment and close ties to industry and European institutions.

Applicants must hold an MSc or MEng degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field. A strong background in digital signal processing and mathematics is required, along with solid knowledge of wireless communication systems. Desirable qualifications include experience in optimization, information theory, positioning technologies, GNSS, or satellite communications. Strong programming skills in MATLAB are essential, and experience with C/C++, Python, or related tools is advantageous. Candidates must demonstrate at least B2-level proficiency in the language of their thesis.

To apply, submit your application online through the University of Luxembourg HR system, including your CV, cover letter, transcripts, and thesis summary if applicable. Early application is encouraged as applications are processed upon reception. The university promotes an inclusive culture and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
