About this position
The University of Luxembourg, a modern and international research university, is offering a PhD position in Environmental Chemistry within the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB). The successful candidate will join the IAS Audacity project AI4TECS, which focuses on leveraging advanced AI techniques for real-time identification and treatment of emerging contaminants in water systems. This interdisciplinary project aims to develop the first AI-powered system integrating real-time contaminant identification using non-target high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) data, toxicity prediction, and transformation product modelling into an early-warning monitoring framework.
As a doctoral researcher, you will contribute to cutting-edge research that transforms environmental monitoring and water treatment. Your main tasks include writing a doctoral dissertation in natural sciences, publishing and presenting research findings in leading journals and scientific meetings, and potentially participating in teaching activities. The project involves retrospective analysis of environmental datasets to develop and test early warning capabilities in surface water systems, designing non-target workflows for identifying contaminants and transformation products in wastewater, and optimizing these workflows for continuous performance assessment of an advanced wastewater pilot system.
You will join a collaborative team with expertise in environmental chemistry, AI, and water-treatment engineering, working closely with another doctoral researcher in the AI4Science Group at the Department of Computer Science. The project emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, with the environmental chemistry PhD focusing on prioritized Non-Targeted Analysis across diverse water matrices, while the AI4Science PhD develops machine-learning models based on these results.
Supervision will be provided by Prof. Dr. Emma Schymanski and Dr. Federica Piras. The position is based at the Belval Campus and offers a fixed-term contract of 36 months, full-time (40 hours per week). The yearly gross salary for PhD researchers at the University of Luxembourg is EUR 41976.
Applicants should have a Master's degree in environmental science or engineering, cheminformatics, or a closely related field, with a solid background in environmental chemistry and non-target screening (HRMS). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, willingness to perform lab work, and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research are essential. B2-level proficiency in the language of the thesis is required. The University of Luxembourg promotes an inclusive culture and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
To apply, submit your CV, cover letter, transcripts, and names/contact details of three references online through the HR system. Early applications are encouraged as review begins upon receipt. Applications by email will not be considered.
