The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, is offering a Doctoral Researcher position within the prestigious ERC Synergy-funded Geracle project. The position is based in the Space Physics and Astronomy Research Unit (SPA RU) at the Faculty of Science, which encompasses research groups in Ionospheric Physics, Space Climate, Cosmic Rays, and Astronomy. The SPA RU is part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence and is engaged in both experimental and theoretical research at the forefront of heliospheric, magnetospheric, ionospheric physics, cosmic rays, atmospheric effects, and planetary sciences.

This doctoral position is specifically within the Cosmic Rays research group, led by Professor Ilya Usoskin. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, international team of about 30 researchers, contributing to the GERACLE project, which investigates the effects of geomagnetic reversals and excursions on Earth's environment. The research focus will be on advanced modelling of the Earth's magnetosphere under non-standard conditions, such as a very weak and non-dipole geomagnetic field. Collaboration with group members working on radiation environment and climate modelling is expected, and the candidate will be encouraged to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.

The position offers a fixed-term contract for four years, starting on 1 June 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, with a six-month trial period. The work will be conducted in person at the Linnanmaa campus in Oulu. The starting gross salary ranges from 2500 to 2900 € per month (before taxes), determined by the Finnish university demand level chart and personal performance.
