About this position

The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary research university in Finland, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in Sustainable IoT Networks Exploiting Energy Networking for Energy Autonomous Operation, as part of the MSCA Doctoral Networks and the HORIZON Europe ANCHOR Project. The Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering hosts this opportunity, offering world-class research and training in wireless communications.

The ANCHOR project comprises fifteen doctoral projects focused on innovations in optical, radio, and THz wireless communications, aiming to harmonize coexisting spectra and networks. The project’s goal is to develop highly sustainable Internet of Things (IoT) systems, emphasizing energy efficiency and wireless communications. The primary objective is to create IoT networks where each node can harvest enough energy to operate autonomously, regardless of location. Research will explore strategies for efficient energy distribution, including energy harvesting from ambient sources (light and radio-frequency signals) and intentional energy transfer between nodes using optical and radio energy links.

As a doctoral researcher, you will design, implement, and experiment with low-power transceivers, energy-harvesting units, communication protocols, and system-level functionalities. Both optical and radio communication technologies are central to the research. You will join a renowned research team with expertise in optical wireless communications, low-power networking, and sustainable IoT systems. The position includes two secondments at partner research organizations within the ANCHOR project, providing cross-sector supervision and training to prepare you for academic and industrial careers.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Data Science, or equivalent, completed before the contract begins. Essential skills include a solid background in wireless communications, electronics, circuit design, system implementation and testing, teamwork, and strong English communication. Additional skills in optoelectronics, AI/ML, PCB/CAD design, programming (Python/C++/MATLAB), and signal processing are valued. Eligibility requirements include not having lived in Finland for more than 12 months in the previous 36 months and not having spent over 4 years in research/work activities after the MS degree, per Marie Skłodowska-Curie regulations.

The position is fixed-term for 4 years, with a starting gross salary of approximately 4251 € per month (before taxes), including mobility allowance. Family allowance is available for up to 27 months if applicable. The application deadline is 29 March 2026.
