About this position
This PhD position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to work on the development of bio-graphene materials for advanced lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery applications. The project is situated within the third-cycle subject of Materials Science and Engineering and aims to create a scalable and sustainable process for converting biochar into high-performance three-dimensional bio-graphene. The research will utilize Fe-catalyzed graphitization, molten-salt templating, and precise control of residual iron species to produce materials with high electrical conductivity, hierarchical porosity, and tailored polar active sites. These innovations are expected to significantly enhance sulfur utilization, enable lean-electrolyte operation, and improve long-term cycling stability in Li–S batteries.
The doctoral student will join a dynamic international research environment at KTH, collaborating closely with industrial partners through national innovation programs. Access to state-of-the-art laboratories for catalysis, materials synthesis, and advanced characterization is provided, and the student will work alongside experienced researchers specializing in bio-graphene and battery technologies.
Supervision will be provided by Docent Weihong Yang and Professor Pär Jönsson, both recognized experts in the field. The position is fully funded with a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement, and includes full employee benefits. The employment is for up to four years full-time, with the possibility of renewal according to Swedish regulations.
Applicants must hold a second cycle degree (such as a master's) or have completed at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at the second-cycle level), or possess equivalent qualifications. Required experience includes carbon materials synthesis and processing, particularly catalytic graphitization and/or templating approaches. Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken, are mandatory, with proof of proficiency equivalent to English B/6. The selection process emphasizes motivation, goal orientation, perseverance, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and strong analytical skills.
To apply, candidates must submit a complete application through KTH's recruitment system by the deadline of April 2, 2026. Required documents include a CV, application letter, diplomas, grades, language certificates, and representative publications or technical reports. All documents must be certified and translated into English or Swedish if not originally issued in these languages. The position offers a creative and dynamic environment with excellent working conditions, attractive benefits, and a commitment to equality, diversity, and equal opportunities.
