About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Quantum sensing with nanoelectromechanical systems. The research will be conducted within the Wieczorek-lab at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, a vibrant and international environment advancing quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics, and future electronic systems. The Quantum Technology Laboratory explores quantum physics for radically new information processing, with research spanning quantum computing, sensing, transduction, thermodynamics, and foundational studies.

The project focuses on quantum optomechanics, investigating the interaction between light and mechanical motion at the quantum level. The aim is to develop novel quantum sensors by exploring optomechanical devices in the quantum regime. As a doctoral student, you will perform experimental research including device simulation, fabrication, and experiments using in-house cleanroom facilities. You will receive training in all relevant techniques and participate in advanced courses within the Graduate School of the Department. The position also includes teaching or other duties up to 20% of working hours.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Microtechnology, Nanotechnology, Photonics or similar. For students educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Candidates should be self-motivated and eager to pursue excellent experimental research in a collaborative environment. Experience in Quantum Optics, Quantum Technology, Optomechanics, MEMS/NEMS device technology and/or Microfabrication is considered a merit. Physical presence throughout the study period is required, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date.

The position is fully funded from the start, with a fixed-term appointment of four years and the possibility to extend to five years with teaching duties. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025), and doctoral students are employees with full benefits. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, Sweden, with generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and offers Swedish courses for non-native speakers.

To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Include your CV, personal letter, a brief introduction, motivation, thesis, and transcripts. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is May 1st, 2026. For questions, contact Professor Witlef Wieczorek ([email protected]), Head of the Quantum Technology Laboratory, MC2, Chalmers.

Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, fostering innovation and scientific excellence for a sustainable world. Join us in advancing the frontiers of quantum sensing and nanoelectromechanical systems!
