About this position
This DPhil studentship at the University of Oxford offers an exciting opportunity to join the Langton group in the Department of Chemistry, working on synthetic supramolecular chemistry at the interface with biology. The project focuses on the design and synthesis of photo-responsive supramolecular amino acid transporters, aiming to achieve spatiotemporal control over amino acid delivery and enzyme activation in next-generation synthetic cells containing protein machinery. Research will involve the synthesis of transport systems for amino acids, photochemistry, and the fabrication of responsive synthetic cells with biological components.
The project is collaborative, involving Professor Alexander Zelikin at Aarhus University, Denmark. The successful candidate will work in the state-of-the-art Chemical Research Laboratory and benefit from a supportive, inclusive research environment.
Funding is provided by the Leverhulme Trust, covering Home course fees and a stipend at the UK Research Council rate (£20,780 p.a.) for three years. Applicants should hold a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree in Chemistry or a closely related subject, with prior research experience in synthetic organic or inorganic chemistry highly desirable.
Formal applications should be submitted via the Oxford online application system, quoting reference MJL/LT/2026, by 12.00 noon UK time on Friday 14th November 2025. For eligibility details, consult the UKRI website. The Department of Chemistry is committed to diversity, equality, and inclusion, holding the Athena SWAN Silver Award.
