Northumbria University is currently advertising a fully funded PhD project exploring the use of e-scooters and their potential to contribute to healthy, active lifestyles.
Doing my PhD changed my life, and I would highly recommend it for anyone that is interested in pursuing an academic career.
The requirement for this position is a 2:1 in a related subject (Geography included), or a Masters (Merit or higher). Please follow the link below and read the full position specification if you are interested to apply. I am happy to chat if you are interested and would like advice on the process.
Brief summary below:
The successful applicant will be interested in social change in public transport and mobility justice. The successful applicant will have an interest in the he ways in which related fields - urbanism, built environment, business, human geography – interact to inform, guide and influence the adoption, use and social aspects of e-scooters in our towns and cities.
Northumbria University has an existing collaborative agreement with Neuron Scooters UK, which will enable the candidate to conduct a public sentiment study using a broad range of methods to utilise existing computational GPS data around geographies of inclusion, risk and use value, whilst drawing insights from route-maps (Geo-fencing) that shape travel decision and behaviours.
This approach will be combined with qualitative public perception data concerning e-scooter community identities and values, including environmental citizenship, access and inclusion and quality of life (QOL).
The study will aim to define how these issues of practice, use and social integration can combine to produce a rich conceptual model of e-scooter adoption. To meet this aim, the study will consider:
- How e-scooters contribute to the idea of an inclusive city.
- Use-perceived health and wellbeing benefits of e-scooter use.
- The value of e-scooters in the narrative of environmental awareness.
- Attitudes for, and barriers to, e-scooter adoption.
- Elucidating the values of e-scooter riders, including the demographics and cultures of user ship, their sense of community and values.
