About this position

The University of Twente invites applications for an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) position in the Digital Dikes project, focusing on developing a multiscale framework for risk assessment of Backward Erosion Piping. The Netherlands depends on its dikes for flood protection, but current models lack precision in predicting dike collapse due to seepage-induced sand erosion. The Digital Dikes consortium, led by University of Twente and supported by partners including University of Utrecht, Eindhoven University, University of Bologna, and Deltares, aims to create advanced digital models integrated into an open-source tool that assimilates monitoring data for probabilistic predictions. This innovative framework will assess pipe progression probability and severity based on dike geometry, subsurface variability, and hydraulic loads, enabling accurate risk assessment and targeted reinforcement.

The project is funded by NWO and involves real-world case studies co-designed with industry, government, and international stakeholders. As an EngD candidate, you will gather and process validation needs for numerical models, assist in laboratory tests on heave screens with Deltares and Water Authority Aa & Maas, co-design and execute field-scale tests at Boretto (Italy) with University of Bologna, and develop frameworks for experimental data analysis. Collaboration with researchers across the Digital Dikes network is central, and you will ensure validation datasets adhere to FAIR principles and are accessible.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, have experience in physical testing and data analysis, possess excellent programming skills (Python preferred), and demonstrate strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities. The position offers a full-time, 2-year EngD track with a gross monthly salary of €3,029, holiday and end-of-year bonuses, pension scheme, 29 holidays per year, and full employee status with healthcare and parental leave benefits. Extended internships at Deltares and University of Bologna, as well as continuing education, workshops, and international meetings, are included. The Faculty of Engineering Technology at University of Twente is a leading center for smart production, processes, and devices, with a vibrant international community and green campus.

Applications are welcome from candidates with diverse backgrounds. Submit your CV, motivation letter, transcripts, references, and any theses or reports via the provided application link. Master students graduating soon may apply with available transcripts. The application deadline is 15 March 2026, with a start date as soon as possible and no later than 1 September 2026. Screening is part of the procedure.
