Dr. Kashif Rasool inviting applications for a fully funded PhD Graduate Assistantship at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar, to join an interdisciplinary research project focused on the sustainable production of biodegradable bioplastics from agro-industrial and food waste (AIFW). This project aims to develop circular and sustainable solutions that transform AIFW into biodegradable bioplastics, addressing global challenges in waste management and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The successful candidate will work on optimizing anaerobic digestion (AD) processes to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs), which serve as feedstocks for bioplastic production. The research will further explore innovative bioreactor designs and advanced microbial community engineering to produce polyhydroxybutyrate-co-valerate (PHBV)—a biodegradable polymer with thermoplastic properties similar to conventional oil-based plastics.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Microbiology, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, or a related field.
Strong background in anaerobic digestion, fermentation, microbial ecology, or bioprocess engineering.
Hands-on experience with bioreactors, analytical techniques (e.g., GC-MS, HPLC), and biopolymer characterization.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Proficiency in scientific writing and data analysis.
Funding Details:
Full tuition coverage and a competitive monthly stipend.
Application Process:
Interested candidates should submit their CV and a statement of purpose (1-2 pages) outlining their research interests and alignment with the project to Dr. Kashif Rasool at [email protected] .
