About this position

The University of Rhode Island is offering a fully funded PhD position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering or the Department of Ocean Engineering, starting no later than Fall 2026. The research focuses on fluid–structure interaction (FSI) with applications in coastal engineering, including computational modeling, simulation, and multi-hazard analysis. The successful candidate will join Dr. Mehrshad Amini’s research group, which specializes in structural engineering, FSI modeling, and resilience modeling for coastal and ocean environments.

Applicants should have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in civil engineering, ocean/marine engineering, or a related field. Required skills include familiarity with CFD analysis (such as OpenFOAM), finite element modeling (such as OpenSees), a strong background in statistics, probability theory, and numerical methods, as well as programming experience in MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or similar languages. Excellent technical writing and communication skills are essential. Candidates must also meet the University of Rhode Island’s PhD admission requirements.

The position is fully funded, covering tuition and providing a stipend. The College of Engineering at URI offers state-of-the-art facilities and a collaborative research environment. Dr. Mehrshad Amini, Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Ocean Engineering, will supervise the successful candidate. His research focuses on FSI modeling, wind and wave impacts on structures, and resilience metrics for coastal communities.

To apply, candidates should email Dr. Amini at [email protected] with their CV, a brief introduction, and relevant experience. If you are already in the U.S., mention this in your email header. Selected applicants must also apply through the URI Graduate Application portal. For more information, visit Dr. Amini’s academic page or the graduate admission website.
