About this position

Imperial College London’s Department of Materials is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on developing a data-rich, non-destructive, on-wing inspection framework for ceramic coatings and composites used in aero-engines. This research aims to address the challenges of inspecting ceramic-based materials in demanding environments, such as those found in aviation and energy generation. The project will leverage advanced Raman spectroscopy and data-driven analysis protocols, including machine learning, to interpret complex spectral data and link it to specific degradation mechanisms. Laboratory experiments will simulate degradation processes, generating reference datasets across various conditions, complemented by nanoscale characterisation (e.g., electron microscopy).

Rolls-Royce will provide real aero-engine samples to validate the developed databases and analysis protocols, supporting the implementation of in-situ/on-wing inspection tools. The project’s outcomes will enable predictive maintenance strategies and extend the lifetime of critical components, with potential applications in other sectors like nuclear energy.

The studentship is open to candidates eligible for Home fees only, as per UKRI guidelines.
