About this position

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science is now accepting applications for funded PhD studentships starting in September 2026. Aerosol science is a multidisciplinary field with applications ranging from drug delivery to climate change, air pollution, and health. The CDT is led by the University of Bristol and includes seven other UK institutions: Bath, Birmingham, Cambridge, Hertfordshire, Imperial, Manchester, and Surrey. Students spend their first year training at Bristol before undertaking PhD projects at one of the partner universities.

Research areas span physical, environmental, and health sciences, as well as engineering. Projects include topics such as rapid PFAS detection using aerosol-assisted microreactors, modelling respiratory aerosols for disease transmission, characterising particle emissions from low carbon fuels, studying road dust resuspension, improving indoor air quality during the transition to Net Zero housing, and exploring the self-assembly of molecules in urban aerosols. Other projects focus on mathematical modelling of airborne transmission risk, pathogen survival in aerosols, and the atmospheric impacts of aerosol surface properties.

The program is highly multidisciplinary, welcoming applicants from engineering, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, medical sciences, mathematics, and geography. Training emphasizes transferable skills, collaboration, and exposure to both academic and industrial contexts. Students benefit from unique instrumentation, industry placements, and a supportive cohort environment. The CDT has over 90 industrial partners and is designed to equip graduates with the skills needed for careers in academia, industry, or the public sector.

Funding is provided for successful applicants, with full studentships available. The first shortlisting deadline is 9am on Monday 1st December 2025, and early applications are encouraged. For more information on available projects and application procedures, visit the CDT website or contact [email protected].
