About this position

Objective

This PhD on coral reef restoration targets the recovery of critically depleted coral ecosystems in Tobago. Building on 20 years of fish biology data, particularly cleaner-client interactions, this study will assess restoration strategies to enhance reef resilience and biodiversity.

Methodology

The research will involve re-establishing Elkhorn (Acropora palmata) and brain coral (Colpophyllia natans), building on a successful fertilisation programme. These species are critical for reef-building and biodiversity. Restoration will be monitored using advanced 3D modelling to track coral growth and structural development. The impact on coral ecosystems, including fish abundance and diversity, will be assessed using AI on pre-intervention video data (over 30 TB footage).

Collaboration

The project will be conducted in collaboration with local communities and the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Fisheries, ensuring that the research is scientifically robust and aligns with local conservation priorities, whilst enhancing the practical application in regional conservation efforts in the Wider Caribbean Region - a globally renowned biodiversity hotspot.

Wider Impact

This study will pioneer the intersection of coral conservation and ecosystem monitoring, addressing gaps in restoration effectiveness. By combining cutting-edge technology, long-term datasets, and local knowledge, this research will enhance coral reef resilience and support sustainable marine biodiversity management.
