About this position

The University of Edinburgh’s School of Engineering invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship in Integrated Underwater and Terrestrial Communication Networks, as part of the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network “Advanced Network Connectivity using Harmonious Optical and Radio Technologies (ANCHOR)”. This prestigious studentship covers UK tuition fees and provides a generous salary, consumables, and travel budget for both Home and International students. The project aims to extend high-speed wireless data transfer to underwater environments, addressing critical needs in environmental protection, national security, mineral exploration, and infrastructure monitoring.

Recent advances in underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) have demonstrated the potential for Gbps data rates in controlled laboratory settings. However, achieving reliable, robust, and resilient data transfer in real-world underwater channels remains a significant challenge. This research will investigate UOWC and explore methods to link underwater networks with broader terrestrial and space communication systems. The project will study the radiative transfer theoretical framework of photon propagation underwater to develop signalling and waveform designs optimized for UOWC channels. Subsequent stages include designing a new resilient waveform, developing computer-based simulations to evaluate performance, and using existing UOWC channel emulators to demonstrate feasibility.

The ideal candidate will hold a first degree and MSc/MEng in physics, electronic and electrical engineering, or a closely related discipline. A strong passion for experimental work and proficiency in mathematical modelling techniques are essential. The studentship is open to Home and International applicants, but to qualify for funding, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the past 36 months.

Supervision will be provided by Professors W. Popoola and M Safari, both experts in optical wireless communication and network connectivity. The research environment offers access to advanced facilities, collaborative opportunities within the Horizon Europe network, and support for professional development.

Applications are open until December 31, 2026, with an expected start date in June 2026 or shortly thereafter. Interested candidates should apply online via the University of Edinburgh portal, submitting a CV, academic transcripts, and a cover letter detailing their suitability for the project. For further information and to access the application link, visit the project page.
