The University of Coimbra is inviting applications for an international tender to fill one vacancy for a PhD-level researcher, equivalent to the category of Assistant Researcher, in the fields of Marine Biology and Ecology. The position is based at the Center for Functional Ecology, Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra, Portugal. This role is part of the MARCentro+ project, focusing on innovation and sustainability in the management of marine resources in Portugal's Central Region, and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the CENTRO2030 program.
The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and executing both field and laboratory activities related to the monitoring of marine resources and the development of technological innovations to optimize artisanal fishing. Key tasks include sampling in coastal ecosystems using remote active acoustic monitoring (echosounders), passive acoustic monitoring (hydrophones), and fish aggregating devices (FADs) to identify fishery resources and bycatch, including cetaceans. The researcher will also analyze acoustic data using artificial intelligence models, produce technical reports and scientific articles, and participate in knowledge transfer and communication with the scientific community, management entities, and the public.
The position offers a gross monthly wage of 3,501.28 euros (index 195 of the single remuneration table), with a contract duration of three years, renewable annually up to a maximum of six years. The employment contract is under public service terms, and the position is full-time (35 hours per week).
Applicants must hold a PhD in marine biology, ecology, or a closely related field, and demonstrate a strong scientific background relevant to the position. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, eligible for public sector employment, in good health, and meet compulsory vaccination requirements. Non-native speakers of Portuguese or English must have C1 proficiency in at least one of these languages (CEFR). Foreign PhD holders must provide degree recognition or registration at contract signing, with the University of Coimbra covering recognition costs for selected candidates.
