About this position

The Micari Group at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is offering PhD and Master's research positions within the newly launched NCCR Separations center in Switzerland. These opportunities focus on cutting-edge research in separation processes, membrane technology, carbon capture, and the application of machine learning to process optimization and material synthesis.

PhD Positions are available in two main areas:

  • Ammonia Production via Membranes: This project aims to develop energy-efficient ammonia production routes by designing membrane reactor models for the Haber–Bosch process, integrating ammonia separation and carbon capture, and optimizing processes in collaboration with experimental membrane researchers.
  • Optimization of Material Synthesis for Challenging Separations: This project links material synthesis to process performance, focusing on membranes and sorbents for applications such as direct air capture. It involves machine learning, process optimization, and techno-economic and environmental evaluation, with close collaboration with material scientists.

PhD candidates should have a background in chemical engineering and a strong interest in computational methods. Admission to the EPFL Doctoral School in Chemistry & Chemical Engineering is required. The start date is from May 2026.

Master’s Projects are available in the area of carbon capture and machine learning. Projects involve the development of data-driven models for membrane and adsorption processes, using rigorous process simulations, artificial neural networks, symbolic regression, and economic and life cycle assessment models. Ideal candidates have a background in computer science or chemical engineering with a strong computational interest. Projects are available from September 2024.

These positions offer the chance to gain expertise in carbon capture technologies, mathematical modeling, optimization, and machine learning—skills highly valued in both academia and industry. For both PhD and Master's positions, applicants should submit a motivation letter, CV, and transcripts by email to Prof. Marina Micari. More information can be found on the group’s official website.
