About this position
The Vance-Chalcraft lab at East Carolina University is seeking applications for one PhD student and one MS student to join their team in August 2026. The positions are focused on biology education research, with opportunities to participate in a multi-institutional study examining learning outcomes from undergraduate courses that incorporate participatory science (citizen science) projects. Additional research topics in the lab include the impact of teamwork training on student connectedness and competencies in course-based undergraduate research, as well as the role of community science in enhancing social capital and building capacity for environmental problem solving.
The PhD student will enroll in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Biology, Biomedicine, and Chemistry (IDPBBC), which promotes student creativity and excellence through concentrations in Biology, Biomedicine, and Chemistry. The MS student will join the Master of Science in Biology program, which offers thesis and non-thesis tracks with concentrations in environmental and organismal biology or cell biology. Both programs provide structured yet flexible curricula, allowing students to pursue individual research interests while gaining professional development experience.
The lab employs both quantitative and qualitative research methods and values students who are motivated, curious, and committed to maximizing the benefits of science for all people. Funding for these positions is available through a combination of research assistantships (grant-funded) and teaching assistantships (institutional funds). Applicants should prepare a short summary of their interests, a CV or resume detailing relevant research, outreach, and teaching experiences, and a list of prior educational institutions, including degree fields, graduation dates, and GPAs.
To apply, email the required materials to Dr. Heather Vance-Chalcraft at [email protected] by February 10, 2026. For more information, visit the lab website or the program pages for the IDPBBC and MS Biology programs. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in biology education research, interdisciplinary science, and community engagement.
