The project aims to understand how atomic-scale structures evolve under real operating conditions—such as temperature, electric fields, reactive environments, and liquids—using state-of-the-art TEM combined with spectroscopy, in-situ/operando environments, and correlative approaches with synchrotron-based techniques. Key research activities include atomic-scale imaging and spectroscopy of complex oxides and nanostructured materials, application of in-situ and operando TEM methodologies under various stimuli, and correlative analysis combining TEM, synchrotron techniques, and multimodal characterization. Collaboration with synthesis, nanofabrication, and spectroscopy groups within the Area Science Park Campus is integral to the project.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the doctoral school at University of Trieste (Italy) and based full-time at the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy (LAME) - Area Science Park (Trieste, Italy), with at least two months of secondment at other institutions. Access to advanced microscopy facilities and other laboratories within the NEXTSTEP consortium is encouraged and supported. The project is interdisciplinary, spanning materials science, physics, chemistry, catalysis, and energy applications.

Applicants should hold a degree suitable for PhD enrolment in chemistry, materials science, physics, or a closely related field. Proof of diploma is required. Proficiency in English (B2 level) must be demonstrated unless the applicant is a native English speaker or holds a degree conducted in English. Previous experience with electron microscopy or spectroscopy is beneficial but not mandatory; skills in programming, data analysis, or simulations are positively considered. Candidates must comply with the Marie Sklodowska-Curie mobility rule and not already possess a doctoral degree.
