About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD candidate position in the characterization and optimization of concrete with low-CO2 binders. This opportunity is based in the Department of Structural Engineering, specifically within the Concrete group, a dynamic team dedicated to advancing knowledge in concrete materials from both material and structural perspectives. The group is involved in national and international research projects, maintains strong industry collaborations, and offers extensive laboratory facilities.

The research focus is on 'Concrete in the hardening phase,' aiming to promote sustainable construction through the use of innovative binders and recycled aggregates. The project targets the development of crack-free, watertight, and durable concrete structures, with research spanning property development of early age concrete and the advancement of calculation methods for assessing structural behavior, particularly in the serviceability limit state (SLS). The work will involve theoretical, numerical, and experimental approaches, with a strong emphasis on hands-on laboratory research.

The position is funded for three years, with a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800 (subject to a 2% pension fund deduction). Additional project funding is provided by Heidelberg Materials and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. As a PhD candidate, you will complete doctoral coursework, conduct research, and disseminate results under the guidance of Associate Professor Anja Klausen (main supervisor) and Professors Terje Kanstad and Klaartje De Weerdt (co-supervisors).

Applicants must hold a master's degree in civil engineering, structural analysis and design, concrete materials, or a closely related field, equivalent to a five-year Norwegian degree with 120 credits at the master's level. A strong academic record (B or better on NTNU's scale) and excellent English language skills are required. Preferred qualifications include research or industry experience, programming/software skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, FEA, LabView), and proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Personal qualities such as motivation, teamwork, and analytical skills are highly valued.

To apply, submit your application electronically via Jobbnorge.no by April 13, 2026. Required documents include transcripts and diplomas, CV, a motivation letter, academic works, and contact information for three references. For further information, contact Associate Professor Anja Klausen at [email protected].

NTNU offers a supportive and inclusive work environment, access to employee benefits, and a vibrant academic community in Trondheim, Norway's tech capital. The university values diversity and encourages applications from all qualified candidates.
