About this position
The Department of Biology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim is offering a PhD position in parasite and plankton behavioural biology and ecology. NTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile, hosting 9,000 employees and 43,000 students, and is committed to creating knowledge for a better world. The position is based in the Marine Sciences section, which investigates marine ecosystem function and sustainable use of ocean life, combining marine ecology and aquaculture research.
The PhD project is organized under the research group “Fish parasites, health and welfare,” with a strong focus on the parasitic salmon louse, a major challenge for Norwegian aquaculture. The group collaborates closely with industry partners through the “Research platform Taskforce salmon lice” and conducts diverse research projects on fish health, welfare, and zooplankton biology and ecology. The scientific environment is highly collaborative and inclusive, offering opportunities for both laboratory and field work.
The project centers on the behaviour and ecophysiology of sea lice and selected zooplankton species. It involves methodological development, investigation of behavioral responses to various stimuli, and ecological contextualization of results. Laboratory experiments will utilize image and video detection, with subsequent analyses requiring programming skills. Established cultures of different species will be used, and candidates may participate in field work. The project scope can be modified based on the candidate’s interests and expertise.
As a PhD candidate, you will complete 30 ECTS of doctoral coursework, conduct high-quality research, publish academic and popular science outputs, write and defend a PhD thesis, and participate in national and international activities such as conferences or research stays. You will be expected to adapt to changes in work duties and contribute to the research group and Marine Sciences section.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree in biology or equivalent, corresponding to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at the master’s level. Master students may apply if the degree is completed before starting. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU’s grading scale or equivalent. Candidates with weaker grades may be considered if they can document particular suitability for PhD education. Very good oral and written English skills are required. Experience with zooplankton, parasites, aquaculture, and laboratory work is necessary. Experience with behavioral experimental work and programming in R/Python is beneficial. Admission to the PhD programme in Biology within three months of employment is required. Personal qualities such as independence, teamwork, motivation, and analytical skills are emphasized.
The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund deducted. The employment period is three years, with the possibility of up to 12 months of additional career-promoting work. Benefits include favorable terms as a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, working capital for project implementation, free Norwegian language training at basic level (A2), and access to employee benefits. NTNU values diversity and aims to reflect societal diversity in its workforce.
Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no by the deadline of 13 April 2026. Required documents include a cover letter, transcripts and diplomas, CV, copy or draft of Master’s thesis, documentation of completed Master’s degree, list of publications (if applicable), and names/contact information of three referees. If invited to interview, bring certified copies of certificates and diplomas. For questions about the position, contact Associate Professor Anna Solvang Båtnes at [email protected].
