About this position

The Department of Engineering Cybernetics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position focused on the development of physics-informed recurrent neural networks (RNNs) for autonomous navigation and neural observer design. This research is situated within the broader context of Embodied AI, aiming to integrate physical models with deep learning to create interpretable, data-driven observers. The project seeks to enable physically grounded perception and control, robust state estimation, and bias correction under uncertain sensing conditions.

Supervision will be provided by Professor Thor I. Fossen, a leading expert in control systems and marine robotics, with Associate Professor Erlend M. Lervik Coates as co-supervisor. The successful candidate will join the Norwegian Centre for Embodied AI (NCEI), one of Norway’s six national AI centers, collaborating with top robotics and AI groups, industry partners, and public sector organizations. NCEI’s mission is to advance a universal science of embodied intelligence, exploring how intelligence emerges from the interaction between body, computation, and environment across various robot configurations, including flying, ground, and aquatic systems.

As a PhD candidate, you will conduct high-quality research, participate in international conferences and research stays, collaborate across departments, and supervise master’s thesis students. Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in cybernetics, control systems, or a closely related field, with strong training in control of marine vehicles and/or robots. Additional expertise in machine learning methods is advantageous. Candidates should have a strong academic record (average grade B or better on the NTNU scale), solid programming skills, and a robust background in mathematics and deep learning. Non-native English speakers must provide proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge certificates). Final-year master’s students may apply, but employment will be postponed until the degree is completed.

Funding: The position offers a gross annual salary starting from NOK 550,800, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is three years, and the position is conditional on external funding. As an employee, you will benefit from favorable terms in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and access to NTNU’s employee benefits.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in cybernetics, control systems, or equivalent, with strong training in control of marine vehicles and/or robots. Additional training in machine learning methods is an advantage. The degree must correspond to a five-year Norwegian program with 120 credits at master's level. Final-year master's students may apply, but employment will be postponed until the degree is completed. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on the NTNU scale. Candidates with slightly weaker grades may be considered if they can document particular suitability for PhD education. Admission requirements for the PhD program at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering must be fulfilled. Non-native English speakers and those who do not master a Scandinavian language must document English proficiency (TOEFL: 600 paper/92 internet, IELTS: 6.5 overall, no section below 5.5, CAE/CPE: grade B or A). Solid theoretical background in deep learning, observer design, programming skills, and strong mathematics are preferred.
