The Aston Institute for Membrane Excellence (AIME) at Aston University is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the development of bio-based biodegradable polymers using green polymer chemistry principles for advanced protective coating applications. AIME is a pioneering research institute that integrates expertise in membrane biology and innovative polymer chemistry, aiming to address global challenges in sustainability and healthcare materials.
This project targets the environmental impact of disposable plastics, particularly PPE used in healthcare settings, by developing sustainable alternatives from renewable resources. In collaboration with Partners for Endoscopy Ltd, the research will create novel biodegradable polymers suitable for spray deposition, with the goal of reducing clinical waste and carbon emissions.
The successful candidate will investigate strategies for synthesizing bio-based polymers, optimizing their molecular composition and structure to enhance properties such as strength, flexibility, and barrier performance while maintaining biodegradability. The research will involve exploring various renewable feedstocks, employing advanced analytical techniques (NMR, FTIR, GPC, mechanical testing), and studying the relationship between molecular structure and material function.

Experience with bio-based polymers, coating techniques, and sustainability principles is desirable. English language proficiency is required.
The studentship provides full tuition fees, a tax-free annual stipend at the standard UKRI rate, and a generous consumables budget for 3.5 years. The position is based at Aston University's Birmingham campus, with regular in-person attendance expected.
