This PhD project at the University of Southampton investigates the coupling of seismic and electromagnetic signals at ocean floor sensors, offering a unique opportunity to advance our understanding of Earth's mantle and crust composition. The research will utilize new and existing datasets, including those collected in September 2023 with co-located seismic and electromagnetic sensors, to explore how these signals interact and what can be learned about subsurface structures.

Marine geophysicists have traditionally used seismic and electromagnetic survey techniques separately to study Earth processes. However, recent evidence suggests that electromagnetic field sensors in the ocean may be sensitive to seismic waves, opening the possibility of using a single sensor type for both survey methods. The student will analyze active-source datasets to determine the extent to which seismic signals are recorded by electromagnetic sensors and vice versa, deriving physical insights into signal generation. These insights may be tested in controlled laboratory or shallow water environments near Southampton and applied to other relevant datasets, potentially leading to innovative geophysical experiments.

The student will be based in Southampton, with the opportunity to spend time at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, California. The project is hosted by the School of Ocean and Earth Science at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton and is part of the IGNITE Doctoral Landscape Award programme. Training will include marine geophysical data acquisition (including participation in research cruises), processing and analysis of marine seismic and electromagnetic data, and supercomputing techniques. The IGNITE programme also provides extensive personal and professional development opportunities and access to a wide network of academic, research, and industrial partners.

Funding is provided for 3.5 years (full- or part-time), including a tax-free stipend at the UKRI standard rate (£20,780 for 2025/26), Home tuition fees, and a Research Training Support Grant of £2,200 per year. The University will waive the difference between Home and International tuition fees for international students. Both UK and international applicants are eligible, though international studentships are limited and highly competitive. The programme encourages applications from diverse backgrounds and offers a guaranteed interview scheme for qualifying UK applicants from racially minoritised groups.

Applicants should hold a UK bachelor’s degree with upper second-class honours or higher in a relevant subject, or an international equivalent.
