About this position
The University of Luxembourg, a modern and international research university, is offering a PhD position in Data-Driven Multiscale Bio-Waste Metamaterials within its Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM). The position is hosted by the computational mechanics group led by Prof. Stéphane Bordas, with collaboration from Dr. Jakub Lengiewicz. The research aims to develop predictive computational models for novel bio-waste-derived meta-structures, focusing on the multi-scale nature of 3D-printed designs and accounting for variations in bio-waste ink composition and fabrication process parameters.
The project will investigate mechanical, thermal, and acoustic properties of these materials, as well as human-centered perception aspects. Advanced computational frameworks will be developed, leveraging machine-learning surrogate modelling and acceleration techniques. The research is part of the EIC Pathfinder project and involves collaboration with international academic and industrial partners.
The doctoral student will join the Doctoral School for Science and Engineering, participating in an interdisciplinary and internationally competitive research training environment. Responsibilities include conducting research in multiscale computational methods, developing theories and computational tools, participating in project meetings and secondments, collaborating with external partners, and disseminating findings through publications and conferences.
Applicants should have a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, with strong skills in mathematical and computational modelling, optimization, finite element analysis, and programming (Python, C++, MATLAB, Mathematica). Understanding of machine learning or deep learning is desirable. Language proficiency at B2 level in the thesis language is required.
The University of Luxembourg offers a multilingual and international environment, high-quality equipment, close ties to industry and society, and a competitive salary of EUR 41976 per year for PhD students. The position is based at the Belval Campus and is a fixed-term contract for 36 months, full-time.
Applications should be submitted online via the university's HR system, including a CV, cover letter, and transcript. Early applications are encouraged, and all qualified individuals are welcome to apply. The university promotes an inclusive culture and values equality and respect for all employees and students.
