The project will utilize state-of-the-art facilities at the Porous Media Lab, part of Utrecht GeoLab, and will involve both laboratory and computational work.

Key research questions include: How do environmental changes weaken clay-substrate interfaces? What pore-scale processes lead to microfractures and particle movement? Can robust upscaling methods be developed to predict field-scale behaviour? The answers will inform sustainable subsurface engineering, protection of water resources, and resilience of urban infrastructure.

The PhD position offers a personalized training program, professional development opportunities, and teaching experience. Candidates must have an MSc in Earth Sciences, Hydrogeology, Physics, Environmental Engineering, or a related field, with strong experimental or modeling skills, proficiency in programming, and excellent English communication. What's required

Applicants must have (or be about to complete) an MSc degree in Earth Sciences, Hydrogeology, Physics, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline. Required qualifications include experience with experimental techniques (such as flow-through experiments, column studies, or material characterization) and/or numerical modeling of flow and transport in porous media, strong analytical skills, proficiency in at least one programming language (Python, MATLAB, or similar), a theoretical background and interest in porous media processes, and excellent English communication skills. Applicants should be motivated to work in a multidisciplinary environment and willing to engage with stakeholders. Desirable qualifications include experience with microfluidic techniques, background in clay mineralogy, colloid science, or soil mechanics, familiarity with DEM, pore-network modeling, CFD, or finite element methods, and experience with image analysis or particle tracking. Non-Dutch MSc diplomas may require approval by the Board for Conferral of Doctoral Degrees.
