About this position
This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on developing novel event-based sensor fusion algorithms for real-time perception and control, specifically targeting the fusion of FMCW radar and event-based camera data. The research is situated within the Neuromorphic Edge Computing Systems (NECS) Lab, part of the Electronic Systems group, renowned for its expertise in embedded systems and design automation. The project aims to address the challenges of low-latency perception in autonomous systems such as collaborative robots and drones, where traditional frame-based processing introduces latency and redundancy. By leveraging event-based architectures and Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), the candidate will design algorithms capable of fusing sparse radar data with asynchronous streams from Dynamic Vision Sensors (DVS), exploring both early and late fusion strategies to maximize information extraction and minimize latency.
Key responsibilities include algorithm design, design space exploration to balance latency, accuracy, and energy efficiency, and hardware mapping onto custom neuromorphic platforms and FPGA accelerators. The candidate will validate their solutions through demonstrators developed in collaboration with industrial partners like Demcon and Signify. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, offering opportunities to work closely with hardware designers and software engineers, and to contribute to teaching and coaching students.
Applicants should have a master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Physics, or a related field, with strong programming skills in Python and/or C++. Experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow), SNNs, quantization/pruning, event-based processing, and neuromorphic computing is highly valued. A hardware-aware mindset and familiarity with embedded systems or FPGA prototyping are advantageous. Fluency in English (C1 level) and a collaborative, research-oriented attitude are essential.
The position offers full-time employment for four years, with a competitive salary (scale P: €3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, parental leave, commuting and home working allowances, and support for international candidates including a Staff Immigration Team and a 30% tax compensation scheme. The university provides a vibrant academic community, excellent technical infrastructure, and high-quality training programs to foster professional growth.
Applications are accepted online only. Candidates must submit a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact information for three references. The vacancy remains open until filled, with priority given to complete applications. For further information, contact Dr. Federico Corradi ([email protected]). The NECS Lab offers a stimulating environment for research at the intersection of neuromorphic computing, sensor fusion, and real-time control, with strong industry collaborations and a focus on impactful, interdisciplinary science.
