About this position
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) invites applications for a PhD position in Health Law with a focus on Disability Rights. As a member of the Department of Private and Economic Law and the Brussels Research Institute on Development, Governance and Empowerment through Law, you will conduct doctoral research examining how legal frameworks governing coercion in care and guardianship arrangements can be better aligned with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The research aims to advance understanding and policy in health law, disability rights, and family law, contributing to both academic and practical developments in these fields.
VUB is a leading Dutch-speaking university in Brussels, known for its commitment to freedom, equality, and solidarity. The university fosters an open, diverse, and innovative environment, with a strong emphasis on self-reflection, critical thinking, and creative approaches to scientific and social issues. As part of the EUTOPIA alliance, VUB collaborates with other European universities to drive educational and research innovation.
The PhD position offers a full-time scholarship for 12 months, extendable up to 48 months based on positive evaluation of your doctoral activities. The grant is linked to government scales, and you will benefit from extensive homeworking options, telework or internet allowances, cost-free hospitalisation insurance, full reimbursement for public transport commuting, campus meal discounts, sports facilities, nursery discounts, and access to learning platforms and training courses. The workplace is open and informal, with a strong focus on work-life balance and exceptional holiday arrangements.
Eligibility requires a Master of Laws (or near completion), strong academic results, proficiency in English (Dutch and French preferred), and a genuine interest in disability rights and interdisciplinary research. Prior research experience is advantageous. Applicants must not have worked as an assistant paid from operating resources for more than 12 months. Non-EEA nationals must meet permit and residence requirements for VUB.
To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, and diploma (not required for VUB alumni) via the online portal by 23 March 2026. The selection process includes an initial review and a job interview.
