Join a vibrant research community at the Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric), Faculty of Landscape and Society (LANDSAM), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), for a fully funded three-year PhD position focusing on Arctic politics. The Arctic is experiencing rapid physical and environmental changes, including a seasonally ice-free ocean, melting permafrost, and increased wildland fires, all of which present significant societal and environmental challenges. The region's politics are shaped by global geopolitical rivalries, security concerns, justice debates, decolonization, sustainability, and evolving roles of Indigenous and state-led diplomacy. Additional dynamics such as de-globalization and the global green transition further influence the Arctic's political landscape.

This PhD opportunity encourages applicants to define their own research interests within the broad thematic field of Arctic regional politics, aiming for conceptually and empirically rigorous research. The position is embedded in a growing research milieu at the department, with active projects on polar and ocean security and governance. The department offers an interdisciplinary academic environment with expertise in world order, security, development, sustainability, environmental governance, and land politics.

The successful candidate will enroll in an approved PhD programme, organize their work to complete a PhD degree within the employment period, and receive supervision from a small team. Main tasks include preparing a project plan, conducting literature searches, collecting and analyzing data, and writing a PhD thesis. Compulsory and elective courses (30 ECTS) with oral and written exams are required. The candidate is expected to develop a progress plan during the first months and complete the doctorate within the scholarship period.

Eligibility requires a master's degree (or equivalent) in international relations, political science, or a relevant social science field, with a strong academic background (minimum GPA B, master's thesis B). Proficiency in written and oral English must be documented. Relevant fieldwork experience, language skills, independent research work, and participation in research environments are valued. Applicants must submit a motivation letter, project proposal (max. 2000 words), CV, diplomas, transcripts, diploma supplements, proof of English proficiency, and references. Applicants from outside Norway should provide detailed descriptions of their study program and grading system.

The position offers a salary of NOK 550800 per year for three years, with the possibility of a higher salary for well-qualified applicants. Employment follows national guidelines for University and Technical College PhD scholars and relevant acts. The position starts on 1 September, and regular campus presence is expected.
