A fully funded PhD opportunity is available in the lab of Glyn Barrett, Applied Microbiologist at the University of Reading, UK. This interdisciplinary project is part of the UKRI FoodBioSystems Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) and focuses on the intersection of microbiology, plant science, and insect ecology. The research aims to understand how insect-derived deposits on leaf surfaces create unique microbial microenvironments that influence the survival of pathogens such as E. coli O157:H7 and Pseudomonas syringae. This work has direct implications for food safety and sustainable crop production.

The successful candidate will employ a range of techniques including microbiology, molecular biology, biochemical imaging, chemical profiling, advanced microscopy, and pathogen persistence assays. The project is designed to provide comprehensive training and includes an industry placement in molecular diagnostics, enhancing both academic and practical skills.

The FoodBioSystems DTP is a collaborative initiative involving seven university partners, including the University of Reading.
